A Long-Held Wish: Finally Seeing the F-16 Up Close
A special day was planned for our 89-year-old wish applicant. Together with her son and our volunteers Monique, Rita, and Ben, she set off in the WensAmbulance towards the National Military Museum in Soesterberg.
She has always had a strong interest in airplanes. Especially the F-16 and the distinctive sound of the aircraft have always fascinated her. Whenever she heard one flying overhead, she would quickly stand by the window to watch. That she could now see an F-16 up close herself was very special.
At the museum, we were warmly welcomed. A retired volunteer took plenty of time for us and shared everything about the planes and other vehicles in the museum. She herself knew quite a bit about the F-16 and visibly enjoyed all the stories and, of course, especially the moment when she could finally see the plane up close.
At lunchtime, we were offered a delicious meal, and as a keepsake, she received some pins and stickers. Small gifts that made her incredibly happy.
But the day was not over yet. Around 2:15 PM, we headed towards Radio Kootwijk, where we were received warmly once again. She had seen this special building from the outside before but had never been inside. Now she had the chance to also see the impressive interior.
During the tour, we heard how Radio Kootwijk used to maintain connections with the Dutch East Indies and later, among others, with submarines. The enormous former broadcasting room also made a big impression.
Afterwards, it was time to drive back towards Hengelo. On the way, she fell asleep, tired but satisfied from all the impressions. Around 6:00 PM, we brought her and her son back to the nursing home.
In the days before, she had hardly slept due to excitement. After such a day full of beautiful moments, special stories, and a long-held wish finally coming true, that night was surely different.
